How The Google Slap is Gonna F*&K You Up in 2024

Google started years ago with a mantra that I personally believe they’ve lived up to overall.
“Don’t be evil”
Yes I know that Google officially removed that from their code of ethics in 2018. I view the updated slogan “do the right thing” that has floated around planet Google is a decent replacement too.
This year Google is going to make massive alterations to two of its big products:
First to Gmail and second to Chrome. They are doing the right thing in my view, but it’s gonna hurt a lot of unaware business owners.
Gmail has an aggressive anti “unwanted email” update coming. Yes it’s labeled as a SPAM policy, but in reality it’s a policy designed to kick all the lazy marketers in the balls.
And to be honest, in years past, I’ve been a little lazy with some of my own email marketing.
Sometimes I’ve been really aggressive too.
Google and Yahoo are following suit with email protection when we look at what Microsoft and Apple have been doing for a while now.
You can read the official post from Google in the comments below, but the laymen’s terms interpretation I’ve written says:
“We as a company (Google), are sick of getting tens of billions of spam messages every day. We are upgrading the definition of SPAM to be anything that you send that doesn’t get opened consistently by your list members and each list member individually.”
We all get sh*t emails that we never read.
I personally use an AI tool that filters 80% of the email I receive so I’m never bothered with solicitations and boring ass newsletters that I don’t read.
I sh*t you not, I have one sender that has been in my spam box for over 4 years because their “unsubscribe” functions are fake.
I always unsubscribe unless it’s a foreign prince who’s hooking me up. Those go straight to the spam box.
So now on February 1, Google is gonna take the inbox back.
So what does this mean for business owners who want to market effectively?
It means you need to send to people who want to hear from you, and send them things they actually care about reading.
How will you be able to tell how they care?
Not by open rates, those are dying a slow death. Open rates will be inaccurate and likely downgraded and disabled in the next 3-5 years TOPS.
Take a look at Apple Privacy Opens, Apple is leading the way as usual.
How do you know if someone loves your emails?
That metric won’t hidden for 99.99999% of email users for the foreseeable future.
So get your readers to click, because they actually love you, your brand and your content.
If you don’t get click rates up significantly, and open rates too (while they still matter for the next couple years tops), then you're in big trouble. Google has communicated in so many words that your entire domain you send from could be blocked from sending email to any Gmail or Google Workshop inbox on the planet.
That’s why this is the biggest Google slap we’ve seen in a decade or more.
It’s going to force email marketers (business owners and marketers working for business owners) to dramatically improve the psychology of their messaging, and the management of their email lists.
Before you start adding whiskey in your coffee before noon, let me explain the second Google Slap I see that makes your email marketing absolutely critical for long term success.
Google is slowing transforming how cookies work in Google Chrome.
This matters because over 62% of users on the internet use Chrome.
Yup, might as well be the whole internet.
And Google is going to deepen and complexify (yes I made that word up) how cookies work and how advertisers use them.
Targeting and remarketing are going to a lot harder in the near future and so nows the time to level up your email marketing and your advertising.
So what do you do?
Lose your lead gen and trash your email list?
Nah… these Google Slaps are a good thing.
They’re gonna knock out your lazy competitors.
…since my team and I have sent over 10 million emails for our own brand in the past decade, we’ve already gotten ahead of this.
It costs a few hundred (or more sometimes) depending on what you’re doing for email marketing now…
…but my team and I have created a strategy that increases clicks and opens by 5-10x.
If you don’t want your email marketing to die…
(and if you want to see a sneak preview of how we’re working around targeting with some really cool media buy options)
Just shoot me a message.
We have room to help about a dozen businesses before February 1, and if more people need help we’ll see about opening up some more capacity.
To your marketing prowess,
