I have had many different people approach me with a “new” great idea that they want use to create what they believe will be the latest and greatest web phenomenon. I understand the excitement of something new taking hold of your passion and have had my share of good and bad ideas over the years. Through trial and error and through observation I have found a few things to be true about what a great idea is and how to bring a great idea to realization.
Good web ideas have some of the following components:
- They tap into an existing community
- They rely on that user community to create momentum and set the course for the site
- They are extremely careful about ad placement as to not disrupt the user experience or offend users
- The use anonymous user data as their core revenue source and decision making basis
- They allow for users to rate each other to allow for credibility rankings
- They are free to use and have premium upgrades or options that are not required to use the site
There are obviously many more factors that make a successful business (website) of any kind, but the things I noted can be used as a basic screening of your idea. The following sites have figured out how to make their idea work within their community:
