Vertical Or Horizontal Growth – Day Thirty

EvernoteDiggStumbleUponShare

Vertical Or Horizontal GrowthIf you’ve worked to carefully implement each of the steps we’ve outlined over the past 30 days, then you’ve already begun to achieve growth and success.  Once you begin to see forward momentum you’ll eventually find yourself with a great new challenge to have, growth!

Consider Vertical And Horizontal Growth

Growing upward isn’t the only growth path to consider.  You should also be looking to grow horizontally into more market segments.  If you watch any large corporation they first grow straight up in their vertical and then they begin to spread out wider.  Both growth patterns are valuable and each should be considered strategically.

1. How Can You Grow Your Business Larger? (vertically)

To grow your business upward in your vertical market you need to apply the steps we reviewed so far.  Make sure that each sector of your business is running smoothly and make sure that you apply automation and systems.  Vertical growth is a natural path for any entrepreneur as it is driven by energy and customer acquisition.  One thing that first timers don’t always realize is that if you grow too fast it can be dangerous.  Be sure to pay attention to the speed of your growth so you don’t allow expenses to grow to quickly.  The growth trend will flatten out at different periods and you need responsible controls on your costs so the slower periods don’t deplete you or put you out of business.

2. How Can You Expand Into New Sectors (horizontally)

After you achieve some exciting upward growth in your vertical market, you can begin to look at complimentary business sectors to get into that compliment your original core services.  Be on the look out for businesses that compliment yours and down the road if you work hard on managing your growth and priorities everyday you’ll be in the position to acquire other businesses to grow yours.  Horizontal growth is a big step and big topic that deserves it’s own research, it’s own post, and it’s own strategy.  However, it’s important to realize that it’s something that your future could hold and you should begin to consider it now.

3. How Fast Should You Grow?

Don’t automatically think that you want rapid growth.  Rapid growth is almost as dangerous as no growth.  It’s important to have goals for the amount of growth and the speed of your growth.  Consider this carefully.  Look at vertical and horizontal growth for your future and you’ll be well prepared for growth in whatever format makes the most sense.

Serve Those Around You – Day Twenty-Nine

EvernoteDiggStumbleUponShare

Serve Those Around YouOne of the quotes that has stuck with me over the years and helped me focus my priorities is:

You can have everything in life that you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want. ~ Zig Ziglar

Looking back at the times that I’ve felt the most successful I believe that it’s been when I have focused on serving those around me instead of focusing on my own needs or wants.  Day twenty-nine is about doing something that truly matters by helping those around you.

Serve Those Around You

Often we start our day by looking at what we need to accomplish, what we want to do, where we want to go.  That’s not a good habit to get into.  If we are only focused on our own wants and needs we’ll miss what the world has to offer.  A life worth living is about giving to others and making a difference.

1. Do What Is Right For Your Team

Start by focusing on the things will move your team forward.  What will ultimately grow them the most and meet their needs?  When you focus on what matters for your staff, your family, your customers, and even your vendors you’ll soon find that the work you are doing is more rewarding than ever.  Don’t allow your own desires to cloud your judgement and cause you to lose focus on serving others.

2. Lead From Your Heart

When you focus on the needs of others your team will see that you do truly care about their well being.  Leading with an open heart is the difference maker when it comes to being able to influence others in a positive direction.  Don’t be afraid to share how you feel.  If it’s something you haven’t done before it will take time but I promise you it’s worth doing.

Last week I was in one of my favorite music stores with my brother and I took the opportunity to ask the shop owner what his one piece of advice would be to a young business owner like myself.  He answered “Be as honest as possible”.  That really hit home with me.  I think it rings true for all situations.  When dealing with your team, be honest, lead from your heart.  If you are gentle, kind, and honest you’ll see that you’ll gain the heart of your team in no time.

3. Communicate That You Care

Leading from your heart gives you the opportunity to show that you care.  You also need to verbally communicate that you care.  Let others know that you care about their well being and success.  It’s amazing to me how many times we choose not to say that kind of thing to those around us even if we feel it inside.  Break that habit and say that you care out loud.  Don’t be afraid of what others thing.  Be honest about the fact that you do care about them.

Serving others is the most rewarding thing that I have the privilege to be apart of.  If you are having a tough time, step back and change your perpective.  Choose to serve others.

Learn Faster Than Everyone Else – Day Twenty-Eight

EvernoteDiggStumbleUponShare

Learn Faster Than Everyone ElseGrowing your small business requires a lot.  There are so many different steps to take on a regular basis so it may seem difficult and overwhelming at times.  Day twenty-eight in this 30 days to grow your business exercise focuses on something that is key to the entire process.  Learning faster than the rest of your peers is what will make the difference in the short and long term.  If you looked at each step we’ve covered so far you would see that being able to learn it faster than most and implement it sooner than your competitors would benefit you and your team greatly.

Learn Faster Than Everyone Else

How do you take steps to learn faster than everyone else?  I believe that it starts with the attitude and internal statement to yourself that says:

I can learn faster than most.  I am willing to work hard to learn quickly.

Read Constantly

All great leaders I know are incredible readers.  Their ability to devour and analyze new information is astounding.  I find that I am more inspired and energetic when I take the time to read a little everyday.  I read a wide variety of technical, management, and leadership material throughout the course of the week.  It serves to educate me and it also gives me fresh tools with which to deal with new issues as they arise.  If you aren’t dedicating time each day to read then you are losing ground.  Make a point to read something inspiring on a consistent basis.  Stay away from negative feeds like popular news media as they only glorify things that are disheartening and sick.

Listen To Podcasts

Do you drive to work, walk, or use public transportation?  If you do then it means that you have time each day to listen to a new podcast with ease.  Podcasts have become one of the greatest sources of education for me because they enrich all my travel time.  I travel one or two times per month and because of that I began searching for something interesting and exciting to listen to before I left.  Because of that I’ve found the Smart Passive Income Podcast, Zig Ziglar’s podcast, and many more.  Now I make it a point to listen to as many podcasts as I can throughout the month.  Even if it’s just one small thing that I learn, it proves valuable in the long run.

Ask The Right Questions

Asking the right questions at the right time is another key to learning faster than most.  If you can identify those that have the knowledge about a product, service, or specific market or need then you can ask them the right questions and gain knowledge and secondhand experience quickly.  It’s also important to not be afraid to ask the hard questions.  If you don’t ask, how will you learn?  Don’t fear the reactions others may have.  Just humbly ask your questions.

How do you learn the fastest?  Share it here in the comments.  I’d love to hear from you!
